Meeting Author Matt Travers

Lady_liberty1

Mattt While we were at the museum, we had the opportunity to meet a wonderful children's author-illustrator named Matt Travers. He recently illustrated a book about the Statue of Liberty. It was a wonderful treat for us to have the opportunity to listen to Matt talk about the process of creating illustrations for this non-fiction children's picture book.

Matt showed us slides of sketches he had created and talked about changes made during the illustration process. He had clearly put a lot of time into research before he created the illustrations. It was really fun to learn tidbits about the details he put into the illustrations.

Honestly, if you know me, you know I love children's books and I was very excited to meet "any" children's book author-illustrator. But, I came away LOVING this book. I love the authors view point and the illustrations are beautiful.

The author, Doreen Rappaport, did a wonderful job of capturing a very personal side of the statue and Matt created illustrations that visually move the reader to an up close and personal perspective. Together author and illustrator welcome us into the heart of Lady Liberty's incredible history.

I remember this. Cole and I explored the outside with some other children while Tami and Alexis went into the presentation.
