Lists:Mom's Cookin'...what I remember

Mom's Cookin'

Things I remember Mom Cooking.

Too tired to post this yesterday I thought I'd still write a few things down today.

My Mum is a great baker and it's more of the sweets I enjoyed, and remember, but as to meals, meat and potatoes were the staple at our table. Traditional "mince and tatties" and shepherds's pie, meat pies, sausage rolls and stew were favorites of mine. Steak pie was a special for New Year's Eve. However there was also fish (I still don't like any fish...I always got bones and hated that) tripe, and black pudding...not my favorites at all. There seemed always seemed to be scones on hand that we'd have with sharp cheddar cheese or strawberry jam. (that's scones with a "awe" sound not a long "o" like is popular here, also made on  a griddle top not dropped and baked)

With sweets there was clootie dumpling, shortbread and empire biscuits, rice pudding, custard, trifles and queen's cakes, sultana cake, cherry cake and meringues to name a few.

Mum always knew how to set a spread for company and I remember waking up late at night to find her baking up a storm for some pending occasion while waiting for my Dad to come in from work late at night. The table would be full of things she'd baked and now were cooling. Wish I had a photo of some of those nights!

Mum's table for a few guests in late '50's I believe the occasion was my christening.

Hannah's trifle in an individual version.

Heather watching everything cooking, and the steak pie Hannah made for our special Hogmany celebration.

I had to reactivate the Yummy cheer for this! Your mothers table was beautiful! So nice that you have a photograph.
