Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Season at te Jersey Shore. This Hurricane arrived in August of 2011,and did quite a bit of damage to the area. We live in a small beach front community that often gets 3-4 hurricanes per season. I have always been a "Storm Chaser", and if you were to go back thorugh all my old photos, I am sure you will find tons of great hurricane pictures ! In this layout I used Mist paper, Pattern # 29, and I chose stamps as my added element. for the matted photos I inked pewter gray paper with "storm blue" distress ink to give it a more weathered look before I mounted the letters and used the acrylic stamps. For the words HURRICANE IRENE, I took my 4x6 photos  of the ocean during the storm and ran them through my Cricut machine. On the word Hurricaine I dipped the top half of each photo in clear embossing ink & then in seafoam white embossong powder to look like the white caps on the top of the rough surf and waves. For the word Irene I did the same technique, only I dipped the bottom of the letters & used sand colored embossing powder to represnt the blowing sand we get during the hurricane. I also used a clear acrylic stamp for the Compass square on the Hurricane page, and the word "wild" on the Irene page. Hope you enjoy getting to see a Hurricane up close and personal !

This pattern is perfect for a hurricane layout. All the destruction surrounding the cloud photo in the center gives you a true feeling of the day. Great job!

Donna: what a great double layout! I wish I could see it "in person" so I could see the inking, embossing, and sand effect better. Even the "wild" stamp gives the idea of wind perfectly. I'll bet it is simply stunning!

I love your title treatment! I'll have to play with using a photo one of these days!

Love how you used the Cricut to cut out your letters from photos. I forget about that technique. Going to have to scraplift that idea soon! Great use of lots of photos, too!

Donna, Like your layouts. Especially like the hurricane warning sign. You don't see those in Missouri. Some of us are storm chasers and some (myself included) are chickens. Glad I could see it thru pictures! Great job.

Think I'll echo Tami's Yikes as well...We get tornadoes around here and they are on top of you before you have a chance to get away, but a Hurricane gives you so much more warning...and dread! How you braved it out I don't know, that would rack my nerves. You have however captured the weathered beach look with your pewter and mist combo. Also LOVE your letter embossing for effect, wish you had a close up though...and WILD is just right too! The photos are great, documenting the destruction around you...wow! ...as to photo tips...I have a flash I can turn off, use light from a window if needed. Cover your flash if you can't turn it off, or shoot with enough outside light present so it won't come on. I have been trying shooting them these past few times instead of scanning just because it was quicker and got the whole page without scanning twice and stitching.

Donna - none of our pictures are nearly as "rich" as the real thing. I always try to use a black background when taking pics, but after reading the article Tami sent us the link to, I may consider white. I just always thought the black would "absorb" more of the flash. I absolutely love the way you flipped the layout for the second page. That's something I struggle with a little more on mosaic layouts than traditional layouts - how to make the two pages compliment each other, rather than being mirror images. Yours is awesome.

We were out of town when Hurricane Irene came through Williamsburg, but our children were home - as a mom that was scary. Thankfully the hole in our roof was a small one (about lunch plate sized.) Thank you for giving me a chance to try out the "yikes" button Donna. :) Your pages are wonderful.

I would LOVE to please get some feedback from all the other DT members about how you photograph your pages with regards to standing them up, or laying them down flat, what type of light source do you guys use in order not to get a shadow or a white spot from the flash. I am not so crazy for how my pages are being photograped, I feel they are loosing so much of the depth that is really ther in person. Thank you so much for any help you can give me with this, Donna Bossone
