Air and Space Museum - Dulles VA

While we were visiting the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC last summer, we learned that there are actually two parts to the museum. The "other" half is located in Chantilly, Virginia near the Dulles airport.

Kevin and Cole were excited to see "more" so, we planned a visit to the "Dulles" museum in November. Our travel plans took us to the Dulles airport - we took advantage of our proximity. We went to the museum on a Monday morning. It wasn't busy while we were there.

There were all kinds of airplanes, some were parked on the floor, others hung from the rafters. There was a hanging walk-way that allowed us to view the planes from a higher vantage point. It was an impressive display.

Kevin was most impressed with the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird - the worlds fastest jet propelled aircraft. On it's last flight it set a speed record. It flew from LA to DC in 1 hour 4 minutes - at the conclusion of the flight they landed at the Dulles airport and turned the plane over to the Smithsonian.

Tami - My son got his pilot's license just after he graduated high school and we were in D.C. that summer. We went to the Air and Space Museum in D.C. because of his interest in flying and space travel, and then he asked if we could go to the one by Dulles. I remember seeing the Enola Gay (plane that dropped the atom bomb at Hiroshima) during an exhibit at the D.C. museum. It was taken apart and we got to touch the fuselage and the propella. I was amazed how small the inside was. Then we saw it at another visit at the Dulles museum and it was put together and suspended in air. It is HUGE. Truly great memories. Thanks for bringing me back to D.C. even if only with photos.

The more I follow your posts the more I realize you have traveled a great deal. I hate to admit it but I am a bit jealous.
