Draw Write Now

When Cole started school I was a little concerned about how to get him to enjoy writing. I purchased work books and alphabet practice pages but he didn't seem to be very enthusiastic about them.

About a year ago I came across a series of books called "Draw Write Now" a drawing and handwriting course for Kids. I love how each lesson shows a picture with sentences to copy and a simple step by step drawing lesson. (See images below) 

Cole looks forward to each lesson and is excited about what he will learn to draw next. He finished the first book (On the Farm) and is working on the second one that includes information about Christopher Columbus, autumn, and the weather.

They offer a companion "work book" that has an area for drawing and an area for writing on each page.

Before Cole starts I ask him to read the sentences to me. We talk a little about the subject and I remind him to write neatly and include the punctuation.

As he finishes each sentence he brings the book to me and asks me to read what he has written. I always praise him for doing a good job.

I remember doing "sentence copy" when I was in second grade. I decided to look in my old file box and compare my work to Cole's.

I remember my teacher telling me I needed to watch my spacing (too tight between words.)

After comparing, I'd say in first grade, Cole is doing a bit better with handwriting than I did in second grade. May be it's the nifty drawing books. :)
