Fairy Tales Can Come True...

There was a lot to be challenged by in this February Challenge-Be inspired by…A Grimm’s Fairy Tale! We never did fairy tales for the kids when they were little, I really don’t like fairy tales. The witches and fairies, babies being cursed or stolen,   lies and deceit, bad behavior all around! Even the disneyfied tales had their flaws! They just didn’t fit into what we wanted the kids to be reading and seeing.

When I was looking for a fairy tale in Grimm to use I was surprised at how grim they were….did people enjoy sending their children to bed with these horrible stories to drift off to sleep? Ugh!

While searching the Wikipedia list of Fairy Tales I began to remember a cake we did for a family that wanted a Fairy Tale/ Nursery Rhyme theme to it. Their daughter had not done the traditional wedding thing but they were determined to do the first baby shower up big for all the family to enjoy. The request was for a multi-tiered cake with sculpted characters. This was a collaboration between Hannah and Libby and I, and there were a lot of hours invested in the project. Libby is the sculptor in the family and this time she traded her Fimo clay for fondant and gum paste.   Hannah, the baker and decorator, handled the bulk of the design and I helped with the painting and the sculpting of the beanstalk.

Hannah’s bakery business, Story Girl Cakes, has the mission to create great cakes that tell your story, and it is her very own Dream Come True, to be in business for herself creating fabulous cakes.

She believes every story (be it birthday, anniversary or wedding) deserves a cake…and she can put it together and make it memorable! This page shows how one family’s dream cake came to life.  These pages show off the way several fairy tales were brought to cake. Some of my favorite elements of the cake were the toadstools Hannah created to dot the cake all around, the crumbs left behind by Hansel and Gretel and the curls of Goldilocks!

The project began with 2 12 x 12 Bermuda Blue Mosaic Moments grid papers. It’s a pretty shade of blue that I thought was perfect for the theme, it reminds me of Peter Rabbits coat…a nice soft blue. Rummaging through my stash of cardstocks for some compatible colors, most I have no idea the brand or exact color, but I liked how they worked together, several shades were found. Two Memory Box dies were used to cut embellishments Elegant Scrollwork and Villante Crest from Color Mates Light Morning Mist.

I had planned something more elaborate, but found some of the prints from the various fairy tales were framed with simple scrollwork, borders, or decorative corners. So I went for a design that had a simple border, a few flourishes and fancy corners. The 1” squares on each page are color tiles with a quarter tile adhered to the top and bottom, with a small punched circle layered on top of that.

Thanks so much for stopping by hope you will enjoy the Tales the Design Team tells for this challenge, be sure to stop by and see them all!
