MMDT 11 – THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE

So many things make me smile that I’ve decided to create a whole scrapbook around this topic. But for today, I’ve picked an object that makes me smile – it’s my bird feeder.

We got the feeder on 2011, so I picked three events that made me smile as they unfolded. The first is and in the upper right hand corner:

SQUIRREL!

DOVER, DE — Oct 10, 2011: The manufacturers of this bird-feeder said it was squirrel proof. I guess nobody told the squirrels. That made me smile.

The second takes four pictures to tell the story:

RED BIRD DOWN!

DOVER, DE — July 16, 2012:  I didn’t know a drama was unfolding until one of my students came into my studio and said that something strange was happening around the bird feeder. I ran outside and started taking pictures.

“Put down that contraption and come help me, fool!” the agitated cardinal seemed to say. I walked closer, clicking pix the whole time. Then I saw Red Bird down!. I brought him into the house and about an hour later returned him to his natural habitat while shooing our cat away. After the class, birdsong filled the air. I knew Red Bird made it home. That made me smile

And the last is in the upper left hand corner:

FEEDING FRIENDS IN NEED

MAKES ME SMILE

DOVER, DE — March 25, 2013: This season’s last snow made our bird feeder the place to be for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or so this Chickadee and Sparrow seemed to think.  Even more birds were searching for fallen seeds on the ground. I can’t help but smile when I see them congregating at this place I’ve provided for their provision. Is this how God feels when He sees us fellowshipping together in His name? This makes me smile.

I thought about stamping and coloring corresponding birds but opted for jounaling squares instead. I inked the edges of the journaling pieces with Colorbox black fluid chalk. The stories are powerful and seemed to override the need for additional embellishments. Of course, my time and equipment challenges may have something to do with that conclusion. But now I need to make my husband smile. I’m going to fix his lunch. Have a great day.

Wonderful layout Diane! I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, but what a wonderful memory...God sure does work in mysterious ways sometimes, doesn't he? The colors are great...I too love the black and raspberry! And, like you, we have bird feeders and birds that make me smile frequently! I really enjoyed both the photos AND your stories!

Red Bird Down! is a special memory and helped creat a unique experience and bond between my student and friend, Margaret Christ. She is the one who held the cardinal and cooed him out of his fear. Who would have know that ten days after I posted his "smile" memory that she would be dead? Margaret made me smile with her exuberance, her zest for life, her upbeat attitude. We will miss her greatly in our scrapbooking community. Her family will miss her even more. Thank you, Tami, for this and every challenge you place before us. Not only do you cause us to stop and revisit what we think we know about scrapbooking and memory-building, but you encourage us to draw out stories that need to be revisited from time to time. Tami, you and the MMDT 2013 make me smile.

Diane, I like the black on raspberry. Did not realize how good this goes with nature. Really like the journaling stories and how they tie to the photos. Nice job :)

Thanks for including the reason your critters make you smile in your layout. Life lessons can often be learned from observing nature! Like the black mats on the Raspberry grid. Nice and dramatic feel!

I enjoyed reading your stories Diane. Thanks for sharing them. Our bird feeder (and all the flowers we plant that bring humming birds and butterflies our way) makes us smile too. I love your idea to dedicate an entire album to the subject: "Things that make me smile." :)
