“Fly Me to the Moon”

Photo Challenge #8 is based on pop culture from the decade I was born. That would be the 50s. At first I feared this challenge the most, but it turned out to be a very easy layout once I decided on my theme, flying. I chose the song “Fly Me to the Moon” written in 1954 and performed by Frank Sinatra. Nick always wanted to be an astronaut which is why the song title reminded me of his flying. He is not an astronaut, just an electrical engineer who loves to fly and sky dive.

I was not able to get a good photo of the journaling because it is very wide, but as you read my post, you will know all about that day.

I chose the grid paper Periwinkle and I used page design #29. This is a 15 photo layout with a journaling block. I used my 2-1/8 hole punch for the photos surrounding the 4 x 6 center shot. I matted that center photo with the same color cardstock as the journal block, a very pale blue. Finally, I used deep blue shiny brads for the corners of the title block.

The center photo is Nick in 2004 performing his pre-flight check list. Jeff is shadowing him for fun and enjoying every minute of it. Jeff would not fly in a Cessna for all the money in the world, but he did enjoy watching his brother take his solo flight. The photos surrounding the page are of Nick checking the plane, taxiing to the runway, taking off, circling the airport and landing.

PRE-FLIGHT CHECK

I went to the airport a couple of weeks ago and took photos of the signage at the airport and the orange wind sock on the runway. The airport is known as Monmouth Executive Airport and Allaire Airport. The sign GARRETT FLIGHT CENTER is on the flight school building.

During high school Nick worked at the airport building banners for the planes that fly advertisements over the ocean. Instead of being paid money, he took flight lessons. It took three years and then right after graduation he got his license and these photos show his first solo flight.

This next photo made my heart skip a beat when he actually lifted off the ground.

LANDING

And then there was the landing. It looks like two planes are about to collide, but while he is landing, another plane is landing on a separate runway. All in all it was a really great and exciting day, especially for Nick.
