Challenge #5 MMDT 2013-Sheila's Birthday

It’s March…already!

This 5th challenge features our 12”x 12” Bamboo Grid on sale this month at www.snapncrop.com and Page pattern #52. We could also add to the layout with a Large Title, Tags and/or Patterned Paper. Patterned paper and a title that spans three sections on the right side of the page have been used for this challenge.

Tami has been featuring inspiration photos on her blog, so included are a couple of photos that inspired the party and then the layout and how it was embellished.

Sheila’s Inspiration came from this photo of cakes and tea pots and cups.

These were taken at the Tea Room where the Birthday Party was held, and are my inspiration shots. Top left to bottom right: The wallpaper, one of the chairs, floral bouquet, hat boxes with butterflies, mantel with clock and floral accents, and finally the gilded frames.

Last weekend Hannah and I attended the party for my friend of many years, Sheila, celebrating her 50th Birthday! She loves to Celebrate! This time a Tea Party at Miss Molly’s Tea Room complete with fancy hats for everyone to wear was where the night began. It was a wonderful night!

page one

I chose to do a large title that spans three sections in the layout on the right hand column of page one because this is a fairly simple layout with room for BIG photos and I thought it would be a perfect place to dress things up a bit.

For the title several die cut mats, flourishes, die cut butterflies, handmade roses, ribbons and printed, cut and pop-dot mounted numbers have been used. This much dimension on a scrapbook page makes me nervous as I worry about the unevenness and things getting smashed in the page protectors and not looking very nice in the long run. However, for the Victoriana look I wanted, it seemed to be the thing to do…how it fairs in the years to come is another thing! Trying to minimize long term damage I tried to balance out some of the other photos that were also foam mounted to help create a buffer zone of sorts.  The patterned papers are all from one collection and one even has butterflies!

The butterflies cascade from the top section to tie in the bottom section of the title. The photo shows how the butterflies were prepared.

Butterfly embossing:

The die cut butterflies in two sizes were okay as cut, but I began to think they needed a little something more. To dress up the butterflies I used sections of a swirl border clear stamp to add flourishes in Brilliance Galaxy Gold ink and embossed it with Opalescence Embossing Powder.  Pop dots, foam mounting tape and a few folds were used to give some dimension in the right spot and give the illusion of flight instead of just a flat butterfly.

Paper petals flowers:

To make the roses I used several paper petals that I rubbed flat on the edge to make them workable and then placed them together to form layers in a rose shape. I finished the centers with cream pearl dots with the Viva Pearl Pen.

page two

I did use a mirror image of pattern #52 for page 2. I made the large sections on this side the area for journaling and featuring the photo of the cake table. The pink stripe paper runs continuously from one side to the other of both pages. Some of the photos are the full size of the block. Other blocks have patterned paper in the 3x3 block size with photos in a 2x2 block size, mounted on gold pearlized paper that is cut and embossed to be my “gilded” frames. Each of the four gilded frames has had different finishing touches applied, butterflies, pearls and gold photo corners.  All-in-all the second page is simpler and hopefully balances out the ornateness of page one.

 Idea for fixing distractions:

On occasion there are things you’d like to trim out of a photo but you’d sacrifice too much of what you do like. One way you can try to minimize the distraction is with an embellishment. In these photos you see the before and after, that glass was driving me crazy! Intending to add pearls or butterflies to the framed photos what I went with instead was a medium sized butterfly and positioned it where it would cover most of the glass. What remains of the glass is not as noticeable because the eye is drawn to the butterfly. As the butterfly is a repeated motif it blends in with the page and the photo gets the recognition it is due.

I've included the text from the page:

For weeks Sheila had been talking about and planning her Big Birthday Party! She wanted to have friends join her at her favorite Tea Room, Miss Molly’s, to celebrate the day. Her Facebook page cover adorned a table full of fancy cakes that she envisioned being a part of her special day. Hannah told her she’d love to do the cakes as her gift to her and began to make plans. As the day grew closer so many people had been sick, including us, and in the final days Sheila’s daughter Jillian was the next victim and all too soon after that Sheila began to feel she’d be next! However, everyone was well for the party, and it proceeded as planned! Sheila’s girls, Olivia and Jillian along with their friend Elissa gave us a mini concert on their violins as we awaited the arrival of our meals.  Lin Sobie brought us a devotional for the evening on the subject of Hope, unknowingly using Sheila’s Life Verse Jeremiah 29:11 as the basis. The ladies had hats galore to pick and choose from for the evening. She received many treasured gifts from friends, but the evening of fellowship was the one most treasured.

The colors and the laser cut outs are great. Pink and ivory and the gold dew drop work so well together on the bamboo paper. This page is a true celebration of the 50th birthday party.

Oh, Andrea! As usual this page is soooo beautiful. Love the title page with all the die cuts, ribbon, flowers and butterflies. It's not too much - just right. Beautiful photos of the goodies! The colors and decor are just great. What a fun time this must have been. Feel like I need to step it up a notch.

I LOVE everything about tea -- tea parties, scones, hats, and all. Tea events are awesome. Tea houses allow us to step out of our busy, day-to-day lifestyles and celebrate in a manner when things were slower and stopping to smell the roses was expected. Your layout embraces that era in so many ways. Thank you so much for sharing this more than special occasion.

WOW! You really put a lot of love into these pages and it shows! First of all, LOVE your inspiration photo, cake being my favorite food group. Love all the other photos as well. Looks like a great time and you really made the bamboo paper look beautiful! Maybe it's the name, but I pictured a rustic layout when I saw "bamboo" grid paper. But you made it looks so feminine and elegant. Very well done!
